After breakfast, your guide will pick you up at your Bangkok Hotel. Drive for about 2 hours to Khao Yai National Park. Check in to your hotel before continuing to observe different types of forest as you drive up into the mountains. Use elephant trails for an easy hike of about three hours, to observe macaques, gibbons, several subspecies of rare hornbills and many other birds, insects, reptiles, orchids, ferns and the plant life of the forest. Even Southeast Asian Tigers are sometimes seen here! Visit a big waterfall where you can swim and have a picnic lunch. Day 2: Khao Yai – Buriram – Phnom Rung Khmer Temple Complex – Muang Tham Khmer Temple Complex – Ban Dan Kwian Pottery Village – Nakorn Ratchasima
Phnom Rung Khmer Temple complex
After breakfast check out of your hotel and drive via Buriram to Phnom Rung to visit Phnom Rung Khmer Temple complex. This site is quite unlike any other temple featured in this itinerary, or for that matter, anywhere else in Thailand! This magnificent structure was built over 1,000 years ago and took several hundred years to construct – the reign of several Khmer monarchs! With our guide’s help in pointing out different styles of Khmer architecture and sculpture, you will consequently notice that certain parts of the temple were obviously built hundreds of years before other parts. The Khmer empire started at the Ankor Wat in what is today Cambodia. It expanded west and north for many hundreds of kilometers. The road from Angkor arrived at Phnom Rung, and continued on to what is today Phi Mai. This “Royal Road to Phimai” was dotted with over 110 hospitals and rest houses at the height of empire. Little remains today of the “Royal Road” as most of the smaller structures were made of perishable materials. Phnom Rung however, is perhaps the most impressive Khmer archeological site inside Thailand. This is due both to it’s dramatic hill-top location and the restoration efforts of the Fine Arts Department. Then visit Muang Tham Khmer Temple Complex & Reservoir. This site is very close to Phnom Rung and much less touristed. It is built in the classic 5-mountain configuration. Impressive!

After visiting Muang Tham continue to Nakorn Ratchasma. Stop en route at Ban Dan Kwian to see the Dan Kwian pottery which is made in the traditional way and in traditional forms as well as the more modern. Then continue to Nakorn Ratchasima for overnight.

Day 3: Nakorn Ratchasima – Ban Prasat Archaeological Excavation Site – Phi Mai Khmer Temple Complex – Bangkok
Up to the Temple...
After breakfast drive to visit Ban Prasat archaeological excavation site, then continue to Phi Mai to visit Phi Mai Khmer Temple Complex. Built in the classic “5-Mountain” configuration (reproducing the Khmer’s concept of heaven), this temple was the terminus / destination of the Royal Road. It was built at the apex of empire (around 1100AD) and took several hundred years to construct.

Also visit the Phi Mai museum which is the best of its type in Thailand. The Fine Arts Department has collected artifacts and created displays, which greatly highten a visitors understanding of the mighty Khmer empire. The museum allows for much perspective over time. Enjoy lunch at local restaurant.
