Bombs Away in Laos!

When the French abandoned their colonial ambitions in SE Asia during the mid-1960s, the Americans stepped in to fill the breach immediately, and for 10 years, the Lao people were caught between warring titans USA & Vietnam.
A map of Vietnam illustrates easily how & why the HCM Trail came into existence; simply, the “MacNamara line” splitting central Vietnam into North & South was not hard for the USA to do and hold.
So breaking international law, the North Vietnamese did what anyone else would have, and went around the barrier.
To stop the inventive NVA and Viet Cong walking thru, the US dropped staggering amounts of ordinance on Laos (an estimated half-a-million bombing missions dropped more than 5 million tons of ordnance, most of it anti-personnel cluster bombs) from 1964 to 1973 during the second Indochina War.
The unfortunate results & knock-on effects are still felt today, and 80% of the UXO cleared in Laos today are bombies.
